Cleaning Tips For Spring
Spring is essentially the time of year when nature rebirths itself and springs back to life. It’s a new beginning that emerges with longer daylight. As this season begins to progress it pushes away the last traces of winter, and with this, the hope of sunnier days beckon. Flowers begin to bloom, and days get warmer as temperatures rise. It’s also a time to reconnect with nature. It sees the return of animals that have been hibernating during the long, cold, gloomy, winter months. Beautiful birdsong can be heard signalling that spring has arrived. Longer days make way for opportunities for evening walks and other pleasurable activities, which make the spring season special.
Now that the weather is beginning to move out of winter, it’s time to think about opening up the windows in your home to allow the stagnant air of winter to vacate your home. This also serves to get rid of the stale air that accumulated and let it out.
Spring is also a fantastic time to clean in and around your entire home. Spring cleaning involves getting down to the ‘nitty gritty’ of your home and giving it a thorough clean. This also involves organising it before the new season to allow yourself the freedom to enjoy Summer when it arrives.
TIPS FOR CLEANING IN AND AROUND YOUR HOME
There is rarely a more satisfying feeling than when you get on top of your cleaning. Below, we set out some areas of the home that require thorough clean to less frequently:
WINDOW AND BLIND CLEANING
As the spring season still has its obligatory cold, darker days to work through until full lighter nights appear, these conditions are conducive to carrying out spring window cleaning. Dull days are better to carry out this task as this minimises bright light that distracts from seeing what you are doing and, therefore, can prevent smears left on the windows. We would recommend using a regular window cleaning pre-mixed solution together with a clean cloth or leather ‘shammy’. You could simply use an effective cleaning solution made up of white vinegar and water, should you prefer a more natural method. You may consider investing in a professional window system such as a Karcher, in which case the results are taken to the next level.
For the rather tricky task when tackling blind cleaning, a light touch is key to avoid causing damage to the often delicate slats. To do this, first use a long arm micro fibre feather type duster and run through an in-between and along each slat. If the blinds are particularly grimy following the winter months, use a damp clean cloth and give each slat a good wipe over. To finish off, use the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner to gently suck away any remaining bits of dust and dirt remaining.
DEEP CLEAN THE FRIDGE
During a fridge clean, most people tend to adopt an essential approach to cleaning this appliance to keep it hygienic. This might involve throwing away out of date fruit, vegetables, food in jars, and other foods, and then wiping down the interior shelves. When carrying out a deep clean on the appliance, in addition to wiping down the interior shelving, take out all of the removable shelves, along with any trays and containers. These can be washed with warm, soapy water to rid them of any residue food deposits and food crumbs that have built up over time. Once cleaned, place back in the fridge and finish with buffing with a soft micro fibre cloth. The entire fridge front, back, and sides can be wiped down with an anti-bacterial spray and a clean sponge. To finish the task, clean down the entire outside of the fridge to rid it of dust and any dirt and fingerprints.
GIVE THE OVEN A GOOD CLEAN
Cleaning the oven can be a task most people dislike as it’s dirty, gunky, and hard to clean. To loosen food deposits and build-up, use your cooker’s self-cleaning functions to remove baked on stubborn grime and gunk. A further useful step in this cleaning process involves using an oven cleaner and following instructions. When used on the oven, allow it to activate by allowing it time to do its work. When it’s done its work, use a damp cloth to remove the cleaning agent and loosen grime and gunk, and then repeat until satisfied with the end result. If there remains any stubborn residue, simply spot clean these areas.
CLEAN BINS
Cleaning household bins is an essential task to carry out to maintain sound good practice cleaning principles within the home. From constant use, dirt, bacteria, and germs can deposit and build. To tackle the inside of the bins, first, empty them and place the contents in your bigger outside household bin. Fill the inside bin with hot water soapy water and allow to stand for five minutes or so. Depending on the state of the bin, you can either rinse the bin out and add an anti-bacterial spray, and wipe around, or, for more dirtier bins, repeat this process until clean. To finish, use an antibacterial spray to clean up the outside of the bin and then buff it with a microfibre cloth.
CLEAN AND PREPARE GARDEN FURNITURE IN TIME FOR SPRING
Over winter, garden furniture tends to lose its pristine appearance and needs sprucing up for the new season ahead. To achieve this, fill a bucket add a dish washing tablet or detergent to tepid water, and stir well. Using a sponge, wipe down garden furniture and clean away any dirt and misdrew build-up. If made from wood, give it a brush down and then add either a coat of varnish or paint, depending on what you intend to be the final outcome.
